The hum of the temporal displacement unit, once a comforting lullaby to Elias, now sounded like a ticking clock counting down to disaster. The empty pedestal where the chroniton regulator had rested gleamed accusingly under the harsh lab lights, a stark monument to their predicament. Silas Croft. The name had surfaced like a phantom from Elias’s periphery, a shadow he’d dismissed as paranoia, but now… now the shadow had a face, a motive, and a stolen piece of his soul.
Anya’s fingers traced the cool, smooth surface of the pedestal, her brow furrowed in concentration. The warmth of her presence, usually a soothing balm, felt like a gentle pressure against his own rising panic. “He must have known exactly what he was looking for, Elias,” she murmured, her voice low, a quiet ripple in the charged air. “This isn’t random vandalism. It’s targeted.”
Elias ran a hand through his already disheveled black hair, his warm brown eyes scanning the chaotic landscape of his lab. Tools lay scattered, schematics unfurled like ancient scrolls, and the metallic scent of ozone still clung to the air. “He knew enough to disable the secondary alarms without triggering the main sequence. That requires a level of technical understanding… or inside knowledge.” His gaze flickered to Anya, a silent question hanging between them. Had he been too trusting? Had his growing openness inadvertently led this viper into their midst?
