The air in Elias’s lab usually hummed with a low, electric thrum, a comforting symphony of gears and circuits that spoke of progress. Tonight, however, the silence was a heavy, suffocating blanket. It pressed down on Anya, making her chest feel tight. She stood by the workbench, her fingers tracing the cool, smooth surface where the Chronos Crystal had rested just hours before. Now, only an empty velvet cushion remained.

Elias was a whirlwind of frantic energy, his usual reclusive demeanor replaced by a raw, exposed panic. He paced the length of the lab, his hands running through his already disheveled black hair. His warm brown eyes, usually alight with intellectual fire, were shadowed with a despair Anya had only glimpsed in the deepest recesses of his confessions about his lost sister.

“It’s gone,” he whispered, the words barely audible above the frantic beat of his own heart, which Anya could practically feel echoing in the tense stillness. “The primary temporal regulator. It’s… gone.”
