Chapter 6
The Sweetest Truth
Amara realizes her feelings for Chidi are genuine. She decides to abandon the 'fake love' charade and embrace the possibility of real romance, ready to laugh through any future 'scams'.
The air in Amara's kitchen was thick with the scent of vanilla and a nervous energy that had nothing to do with an over-proofed dough. It was a Saturday, a day that usually hummed with the cheerful clatter of baking and the easy banter of friends. Today, however, a different kind of buzz filled the space, a low thrum of anticipation that made her fingers tremble as she measured out flour. The baking competition was on, a whirlwind of sugar, spice, and fierce, friendly rivalry. But it wasn't just the competition that had her stomach doing flip-flops; it was the knowledge that Chidi would be there.
Her best friend, the architect of this delightful chaos, bustled around, arranging platters of miniature cupcakes and ensuring every stray crumb was banished. "You've got this, Ama!" she chirped, her voice a bright melody against the gentle whir of the stand mixer. "Your lemon-lavender macarons are going to blow them all away. And who knows," she winked, a mischievous glint in her eye, "maybe a certain architect will be particularly impressed."
Amara managed a weak smile, her gaze drifting to the window, where the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the manicured lawn. She’d been so sure, just weeks ago, that love was a scam. A carefully constructed façade, like a sugar-spun showstopper that collapsed under the slightest pressure. Her friends’ relentless matchmaking, the endless parade of well-meaning but ultimately disappointing dates… it had all felt like a performance, a tedious one at that. And her own joke, her declaration of crafting a fake boyfriend, had spiraled into a reality that was far more complicated, and surprisingly, far more wonderful, than she'd ever imagined.
