The ultrasound room was cool and dim, the overhead lights turned low to make the monitor glow. Skye lay on the exam table, her hand gripping Dale's so tightly his fingers had gone numb. The technician, a soft-spoken woman named Patricia, moved the wand over Skye's gel-slicked belly with practiced precision. The screen flickered, then resolved into a grainy black-and-white image.
"There," Patricia said, pointing. "And there. Two gestational sacs. You're definitely having twins."
Skye let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Dale leaned closer, his eyes fixed on the two small shapes, each with a flickering heartbeat like a tiny star. "Two," he whispered. "Our lavender and butterfly."
