Dale and Skye return home to face the escalating threat from the past. She tells Dale in a tender, tearful moment, and together they resolve to protect their growing family no matter what comes.
The morning after their return, Dale woke before the sun. The bedroom was still dark, Skye's breathing slow and even beside him, but his mind was already churning. He slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb her, and padded barefoot to the window. The street below was quiet, the neighbor's porch light a pale orange glow. The man Chloe had described haunted him—tall, dark-haired, a hat obscuring his face. A ghost from the past made flesh.
He stood there until the first hints of grey light touched the horizon, then went downstairs to make coffee. The house felt different now. Charged. The familiar creak of the floorboards, the scent of wood polish from the workshop—everything seemed to hold its breath.
Skye found him at the kitchen table, a cold mug in his hands. She was wrapped in her robe, her hair tousled, her eyes heavy with sleep. "Couldn't sleep either?"
