The following Saturday arrived with the kind of golden light that made even the weeds in the garden look intentional. Dale stood at the kitchen window, a cup of coffee warming his hands, watching Skye strap Margaret into the car seat. She moved with the efficient grace of someone who had dressed a thousand wriggling infants, her fingers deftly clicking the buckles into place while Margaret grabbed at her hair.
"You're losing the battle," Dale called through the open door.
"I've already lost it," Skye said, extracting a strand from Margaret's grip. "She has your stubbornness."
