The days after Skye's quarantine had a quality of renewal about them, as if the house itself had drawn a deep breath and remembered how to exhale. Dale found himself humming while he worked on the Whitfield memorial, the chisel in his hand finding rhythms he had not known he possessed. The walnut grain opened under his blade like a story waiting to be told, and each stroke felt less like labor and more like prayer.

Skye had returned to her part-time hours at the hospital, but only the day shift, and only three days a week. The rest of her time belonged to Margaret, to the garden, to the workshop, to him. He watched her move through their home with a lightness he had not seen before, as if the quarantine had burned away some residue of old weariness. She laughed more easily. She sang to Margaret in the mornings. She left notes for him in the workshop, tucked between the pages of his sketchbook: You are my favorite kind of quiet.

Eleanor came too, though less frequently, her shifts at the hospital still demanding. But when she came, she stayed. She held Margaret while Skye showered. She sat in the garden with a book while Dale sanded a table leg. She and Marcus had developed a habit of finishing each other's sentences, and Dale had noticed the way Marcus's eyes followed her when she moved across the room.
