Mother’s Astonishment

Mother’s nose twitched. Something was… off. The kitchen, usually a symphony of sizzling and clattering, was eerily quiet. A low, rhythmic thudding, however, was emanating from Nora’s usual corner, the one by the pantry. It sounded like someone was enthusiastically, if a bit haphazardly, chopping something. Curious, and a little apprehensive – Nora’s culinary adventures rarely ended well – she peeked around the doorframe.

What she saw made her eyes widen, then narrow, then widen again, all in rapid succession. Nora, her face smudged with what looked suspiciously like flour dust, was standing by the counter, a large, very brown piece of cardboard held aloft in one hand. In the other, she wielded a child-sized plastic knife, hacking away at it with fierce concentration. Little brown flakes, some surprisingly large, were scattering across the counter and onto the floor. A small, overturned pot lay beside her, looking as though it had been used for some sort of… mixing.
