Chapter 4

The Reveal

Mother returns, expecting delicious fried rice. She calls for Nora to bring her the dish. Nora proudly presents her creation: a plate piled high with bits of cardboard.

Mother’s stomach rumbled a tune that sounded suspiciously like a grumpy bear waking from a nap. She’d been busy all morning, tidying the garden, wrestling with a particularly stubborn rose bush that seemed to have a personal vendetta against her secateurs. Now, all she wanted was a nice, simple plate of fried rice. She’d even imagined the fluffy grains, the little flecks of green peas, maybe a tiny bit of scrambled egg mixed in. A little bit of comfort food to end her morning’s labor.

“Nora!” she called, her voice echoing through the quiet house. “Nora, darling, come here for a moment, won’t you?”

Silence. Mother sighed. Nora was probably off somewhere, engrossed in her own particular brand of… well, whatever it was Nora did. Sometimes Mother suspected Nora’s brain operated on a different frequency, one that only broadcasted in squiggles and giggles.
