Chapter 7: The Mountain of Light
Mikutis and Jonas fly toward the mountain with the pulsing light, only to be intercepted by the fox in his dark balloon. A tense chase leads them to a hidden cave on the mountainside, where they discover an ancient flying machine and a mysterious message. The fox reveals his true motive: he wants the moonmint for himself. The chapter ends with the fox cutting their balloon loose, sending Mikutis and Jonas plummeting toward the mountain.
The wind carried the balloon steadily toward the mountain. Mikutis watched the pulsing light grow larger, its rhythm steady like a heartbeat. The clouds below had closed up again, hiding the farm and the stone circle. Above them, the stars glittered in a cold, clear sky.
Jonas adjusted the valve, slowing their ascent. “We’re getting close,” he said. “I can see the shape of the mountain now. It’s covered in trees, but there’s a bare patch near the top. That’s where the light is coming from.”
Mikutis leaned over the edge of the basket. The mountain rose like a dark wall in front of them. The light was not a single flame but a cluster of glowing crystals set into the rock. They pulsed in a slow, hypnotic pattern, casting blue and silver shadows on the cliff face.
