Chapter 12
The Heart of the Sky
Mikutis, Jonas, the fox, and Laima approach the black tower. They cross a valley, discover a hidden garden with a star-shaped key, and unlock the tower's door. Inside, they find a room with a glowing orb that shows the farm under attack by the watcher's shadow. The orb reveals the star cat's final message, and the chapter ends with the shadow arriving at the tower's base.
The grass under Mikutis's paws was soft and warm, and the breeze carried a scent he didn't recognize—like honey and pine needles mixed together. He stood up and shook the dust of the star path from his fur. Beside him, Jonas stretched his arms and laughed, still giddy from their landing. The fox rolled in the grass, his tail sweeping happy arcs through the air. Only Laima remained still, her glow pulsing gently as she gazed at the distant tower.
“That’s the Heart of the Sky,” she said, her voice soft but clear. “The star cat came here at the end of her journey. She said it was a place of answers, but also of farewells.”
Mikutis looked at the tower. It rose from the highest hill like a black needle, smooth and dark, with a single red light at its peak that blinked like a slow heartbeat. The sight made his fur prickle, but not with fear. It was more like the feeling he got when he heard a strange sound at night—curiosity, mixed with a touch of wonder.
