Chapter 11
The Star Path
Mikutis, Jonas, the fox, and Laima emerge in a starry realm beyond the gate. They follow a glowing path and meet a being made of light who explains they must each give up a cherished thing to prove their intentions. The fox offers the last moonmint leaf, Jonas offers his flight goggles, and Mikutis offers his dream of flying. The being accepts and reveals a new sky gate that leads to a hidden world, but a shadow appears on the path behind them.
The stars spun around Mikutis like a thousand fireflies, and for a moment he felt as if he were falling. Then the spinning stopped, and he stood on something solid, though it looked like nothing but air. Beneath his paws was a path made of light, stretching into an endless darkness dotted with tiny, glowing points.
“Where are we?” Jonas whispered. He stood beside Mikutis, his hand still clutching the torn balloon fabric. The fox crouched nearby, his ears flat and his tail low. Laima floated ahead, her glow brighter than ever, casting soft shadows on the star path.
“This is the space between gates,” Laima said, her voice echoing as if from far away. “The star cat walked here once. It is a place of memory and choice.”
