Chapter 5
A New Beginning
Minage marries and welcomes her first son, named Kabaka. She begins building a home for her mother in Nakuru, facing financial hurdles and the loss of her grandmother, Epiness Minage.
The journey to Vihiga, though steeped in the bittersweet ache of loss, had woven a new tapestry of belonging into the very fabric of Minage’s being. The answers, however painful, had brought a quiet strength, a sense of grounding she hadn't realized she'd been missing. Returning to Nairobi felt like stepping back into a familiar rhythm, but with a subtly altered cadence. The city lights seemed to gleam with a newfound promise, each street corner holding the potential for a future she was now more equipped to embrace.
It was in March of 2012, a year after the profound revelations of her ancestral home, that life presented another unexpected turn. A quiet realization bloomed within her: she was pregnant. The news, a surprise that rippled through her carefully constructed calm, immediately compelled a deeper introspection. This was no longer just about her own journey of discovery; it was about building a new life, a new family. She informed the father, a man she had met at her workplace, and to her relief, he met the news with a sense of responsibility. “We should involve our families,” he had said, his voice steady, “and move forward together.”
The first step was to introduce him to her mother. She brought him to Dandora, to the modest dwelling where her mother resided, a place that had always felt like a sanctuary, even amidst its challenges. Her mother, ever gracious, welcomed them with open arms. There, amidst the familiar scent of home-cooked meals and the comforting presence of family, they shared their intentions, their hopes for a future together. Plans began to unfurl, tentative at first, then gaining momentum as both families agreed to meet. Later, the journey led them to Nakuru, to the embrace of her grandmother’s side of the family, her shosh’s home, a place that held the echoes of her own childhood.
