Chapter 9: The House on Primrose Lane
Elizabeth, Gene, Beatrice, Wally, Truffles, and Gene's mother Margaret flee to a safe house, where they learn the full scope of Pemberton's power and discover the evidence is more explosive than they thought. Pemberton's men surround the house, forcing them to escape through a hidden tunnel into the woods, leaving them stranded on foot with a helicopter in pursuit.
The van tore through Clear Springs like a jackrabbit with a tailpipe on fire. Wally’s knuckles were white on the wheel, his eyes darting between the rearview mirror and the road ahead. Margaret, Gene’s mother, sat in the passenger seat, calm as a librarian who’d just checked out a book on guerrilla warfare. She didn’t look back. She didn’t need to.
“Left here,” she said. “Then another left, then straight for two miles. There’s a gas station with a broken sign. Pull in behind it.”
“You’ve got this town memorized?” Wally asked.
