The group drives toward Clear Springs but stops at a diner where Gene discovers a hidden compartment in his journal containing a key and a letter from his mother, revealing she is alive and was once Pemberton's secretary. This secret forces them to reconsider their plans and head to a small town to retrieve crucial evidence she left behind.
The van hummed along the highway, a low, tired sound that matched the mood inside. Truffles lay sprawled across Beatrice’s lap, snoring with the dedication of someone who had earned her rest. Wally kept one hand on the wheel and the other on a half-empty coffee cup, occasionally muttering about the quality of gas station brew. Elizabeth sat in the back with Gene, their shoulders touching, watching the roadside diners and motels blur past.
“How much longer?” Beatrice asked, poking Truffles to shift her weight.
“Three hours, maybe four,” Wally said. “We need to stop for gas before that. This rust bucket runs on fumes and hopes.”
