Chapter 7: The Almost-Romantic Motel
After escaping the compound, the group drives all night and checks into a rundown motel. While hiding out, Elizabeth and Gene finally have a private conversation about their future, deepening their connection. Wally and Beatrice bicker comically, and Truffles provides comic relief. They realize they need a new plan to evade Pemberton permanently.
The van rattled through the back roads of a county Elizabeth didn't recognize anyway. Headlights stabbed the dark, showing only pines and gravel and the occasional startled raccoon. Wally had taken the wheel, muttering under his breath about retirement plans and ungrateful accomplices. Beatrice sat shotgun, one hand on the dashboard, the other clutching a half-empty cup of cold coffee. In the back, Elizabeth and Gene huddled together on a bench seat that smelled like floor wax and old fast food. Truffles had worked her way onto Gene’s lap and was now snoring with her head on his forearm.
“Can I just point out,” Wally said, not for the first time, “that I was supposed to be on a beach? Margaritaville. A hammock. No warrants. No wanted posters. Instead I’m driving a stolen van with three fugitives and a dog.”
“Four fugitives if you count yourself,” Beatrice said.
