Eva’s gentle gaze often felt like coming home. It was a gaze that had witnessed Ella’s every triumph and every stumble, a silent witness to the unfolding tapestry of her life. Six years had woven their shared existence into something so familiar, so utterly comfortable, that Ella sometimes forgot there had ever been a time before Eva. Their friendship was a well-worn armchair, perfectly molded to her shape, a sanctuary from the often-harsh winds of the world. Eva, with her steady warmth and perceptive eyes, was the constant, the North Star by which Ella navigated her days.

Now, however, that familiar gaze seemed to hold a new depth, a subtle luminescence that Ella couldn't quite decipher. Was it merely the play of light, the soft glow of the café’s lamps reflecting in those kind eyes, or was it something more? A flicker of awareness, perhaps, a nascent understanding of the seismic shift that had occurred within Ella’s own heart? The question, a tiny seed of doubt, had begun to sprout, its tendrils winding around Ella’s thoughts like ivy.

They sat at their usual corner table, the scent of roasted coffee beans and warm pastries a comforting balm. Sunlight, dappled through the leaves of the ancient oak outside, painted shifting patterns on their worn wooden table. Eva was describing a new project at work, her hands animated, a soft smile gracing her lips. Ella watched her, her own coffee growing cold, her mind adrift in a sea of unspoken emotions. Eva’s laughter, a melody Ella knew by heart, bubbled up, and for a fleeting moment, Ella imagined a different kind of music, a softer, more intimate tune, playing between them.
