The morning after my graduation, I woke up in our three bedroom upstairs house with the certificate still in its folder on the nightstand. I reached out and touched it, feeling the weight of what it meant. It wasn't just a piece of paper. It was proof that I had done something everyone said I couldn't do.

My son stirred in the crib beside our bed, and I lifted him into my arms, breathing in his sweet baby scent. His father was already up, heating water on the stove for tea. He turned and smiled at me, that same smile that had been my anchor through every storm.

"Good morning, graduate," he said softly.
