The morning of my graduation, I woke up before the sun. The sky outside my window was a soft, bruised purple, the kind of color that promises either a storm or a miracle. I lay still for a moment, feeling the weight of the day pressing down on my chest. This was it. The moment I had worked for, cried for, and fought for through sleepless nights and lonely afternoons.

I had already laid out my uniform and a simple dress the night before—a simple white number that my son’s father had helped me pick out from a not cheap not too expensive store in Half Way Tree. It was a little too big in the shoulders, but I didn’t care. It was mine. I pinned a small, fake orchid to the collar. the same uniform I had worn to my spelling bee competition couple months ago. That day, the auditorium had been half-empty, and the only face I remembered scanning for was one that never appeared. Not my mother. Not my siblings. Just the echo of my own voice stumbling over a word I had practiced a hundred times.

I shook the memory away. Today would be different.
