The hesitant strokes of early entries had begun to gain a bolder, more confident sweep. It was as if the very act of putting pen to paper, day after day, had begun to loosen something tight within me. It reminds me of Anan’s hands, how they used to hold mine, rough and warm, like the bark of that very tree.”
