Banished and Lost

Accused and cast out by his family, Zeus runs far away. Exhausted and alone, he narrowly avoids the dog catcher, darting into the forest, only to tumble down a steep hill.

Zeus’s paws pounded the dusty track, a desperate rhythm against the encroaching silence. Each breath was a ragged gasp, each thud of his heart a frantic drumbeat against his ribs. He ran, not towards anything, but away from everything – the farmer’s furious shouts, Tyson and Lucy’s snapping jaws, the cold, hard accusation of being a “wicked and stupid dog.” The world, once a blur of playful chaos, had narrowed to a single, terrifying truth: he was alone. Utterly, completely alone.

The familiar scent of strawberries, once a comforting anchor, faded into the harsh, dry smell of roadside weeds and exhaust fumes. A low growl rumbled in his chest, a sound of pure, unadulterated fear. He’d never felt this hollow ache before, this gnawing emptiness that went deeper than hunger. It was the absence of belonging, the chilling realization that no matter how hard he tried, he was always on the outside, always Mr. Understood.

A distant, wailing siren pierced the air, a sound that sent a fresh wave of panic through Zeus. He knew that sound. He knew the van that followed it. The dog catcher. Her face, stern and determined, flashed in his mind. She’d been after him for weeks, a persistent shadow on his already tumultuous life. He could almost feel her eyes on his back, a tangible weight urging him to run faster, to disappear.
