Chapter 16
The Wild Magic Unleashed
Confronted by the dark force, Lara's wild magic erupts, no longer a threat but a raw, untamed power, surprising even herself.
The air in the heart of the woods had grown thick, cloying, like breathing in damp wool. It pressed in on Lara, a tangible weight that stole the breath from her lungs and the light from her eyes. Twisted branches, skeletal and grasping, clawed at the bruised twilight sky. The familiar, comforting scent of pine and damp earth was gone, replaced by something fetid, something that whispered of decay and hunger. This was where Old Man Hemlock had warned her not to tread, this was the place that pulsed with a wrongness that resonated deep within her bones.
She had come seeking answers, a desperate chase after the encroaching shadows that had begun to lick at the edges of Havenwood. Butanswers were a luxury now, replaced by a primal urge to survive. It was the source of the unease that had settled over the town, the reason for Lyra's tight-lipped worry and Maeve’s ever-present suspicion. It was the thing that had been drawn, inexorably, to the volatile spark of her own untamed magic.
A guttural growl, deeper than any animal’s, tore through the oppressive silence. The shadows writhed, coalescing into a semblance of form – too many limbs, too many eyes glinting with malevolent hunger. Lara stumbled back, her hands instinctively rising, not in defense, but in a desperate plea for her magic to simply be.
