Chapter 15
The Heart of the Woods
Lara, guided by Hemlock's cryptic clues, ventures into the heart of the darkened woods to understand the source of the encroaching evil.
The air in the woods grew thick and heavy, pressing in on Lara like a shroud woven from damp earth and decaying leaves. Hemlock’s words, a trail of breadcrumbs scattered through a dark forest, had led her here, to a place where the sunlight struggled to penetrate even at midday. He’d spoken of a heart, a source, a place where the woods bled their darkness. She clutched the smooth, cool stone he’d given her, its faint warmth a meager comfort against the encroaching chill.
Each step crunched on a carpet of fallen needles and brittle twigs, the sound unnaturally loud in the oppressive silence. The trees here were ancient, their bark gnarled and twisted like the faces of old men, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. Shadows clung to their roots, deep and impenetrable, and Lara felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. This wasn't just a forest; it was a place holding its breath, waiting.
She remembered her grandmother’s warnings, tales of the woods that held a power of their own, a power that could be both benevolent and utterly consuming. Her own magic, the wild, untamed thing that surged within her, felt like a pale imitation of this primal force. Yet, Hemlock had insisted it was connected, that understanding this place was key to understanding herself.
