The air in the living room hung thick with unspoken accusations. Sarah, sprawled on the sofa with her phone held like a shield, refused to meet Eleanor’s gaze. The remnants of their latest Rewop Thing escapade – a rather unsettling afternoon spent as sentient teacups in a Victorian parlor, complete with a stern hostess who seemed to delight in being perpetually unsatisfied – lay scattered around them. A chipped porcelain saucer, a rogue sugar cube, and the faint, lingering scent of Earl Grey tea, all served as silent witnesses to the latest disruption. Eleanor, perched on the edge of an armchair, her shoulders tight with a weariness that went beyond physical exhaustion, traced the rim of her own teacup.
“I just don’t understand, Sarah,” Eleanor began, her voice a low murmur, strained. “We were supposed to be at Mrs. Gable’s for the book club. The book club, Sarah. The one I’ve been looking forward to all month.”
Sarah finally looked up, a flicker of defiance in her eyes. “And I was supposed to be at Chloe’s studying for the history test. Which, by the way, I’m now going to fail because I spent three hours being a vessel for lukewarm liquid and polite, passive-aggressive criticism.”
