The midday sun beat down on Amuri Village, turning the dust motes dancing in the air into tiny, shimmering diamonds. Akeli, her brow furrowed in concentration, tried to ignore the familiar thrum of anxiety in her chest. It was the day of the annual village festival, a riot of colour and noise, and more importantly, a social battlefield. Aketch, Queen Bee of Amuri Secondary, had made her intentions clear: Akeli was either in or out. And ‘out’ was a terrifying prospect, a lonely abyss where whispers turned to roars and laughter echoed with mockery.

Aketch, a vision in a vibrant emerald kente cloth, her braids adorned with glittering beads that caught the sunlight, sauntered towards Akeli. Her entourage, a gaggle of giggling girls who seemed to exist solely to echo Aketch’s pronouncements, trailed behind her like a flock of well-dressed pigeons. "Akeli," Aketch drawled, her voice dripping with faux sweetness, "still admiring the weeds, I see."

Akeli’s cheeks flushed. She had been diligently trying to coax a stubborn patch of wild hibiscus into blooming near the school gates, a futile attempt at beautifying the neglected corner. "They have their own beauty," Akeli mumbled, her gaze fixed on a particularly tenacious bloom.
