The afternoon sun, usually a benevolent golden blanket over Amuri Village, seemed to have a peculiar, almost accusatory glint to it today. It bounced off the dusty ground, making Akeli squint as she hurried along the path towards the schoolhouse. Her heart, however, was far from sunny. It felt like a trapped bird, beating frantic wings against her ribs. Yesterday’s events had left a sour taste in her mouth, a bitter residue that clung to her thoughts like stubborn burrs.

She’d been walking with a knot of girls – Aketch, of course, preening at the head of the pack, and a few of her usual sycophants trailing behind. Akeli, desperate for a sliver of acceptance, had been trying her best to keep up, to laugh at the right moments, to nod sagely at Aketch’s pronouncements on the latest fashion trends (which, in Amuri, mostly involved how best to tie a kaba to make one’s hips appear wider). Then, it had happened.

They’d been passing by the mango tree, its branches heavy with ripening fruit, when Aketch had suddenly stopped. Her eyes, sharp and assessing, had fixed on Akeli. “Akeli,” she’d said, her voice dripping with a sweetness that never quite reached her eyes, “Did you hear what Njeri said about Ojede’s drawings?”
