Chapter 5
Mama Opitchi's Brew
Seeking solace, Akeli visits Mama Opitchi. The elder shares a cryptic story over a warm brew, hinting at the deceptive nature of appearances and the strength found within.
The dusty path to Mama Opitchi’s hut was a familiar one, yet today it felt like a journey to a different world. Akeli’s heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drumbeat of worry and a desperate hope for understanding. School had been a battlefield, a dizzying whirl of whispered judgments and sidelong glances that felt like tiny, sharp stones thrown at her soul. Aketch and her entourage had been particularly brutal, their laughter echoing in the corners of the classroom long after they’d moved on to dissecting someone else’s perceived flaws. Akeli’s carefully constructed composure, the one she’d spent hours perfecting in front of her cracked mirror that morning, had shattered into a thousand irreparable pieces.
Mama Opitchi’s hut, nestled under the shade of a sprawling mango tree, was an oasis of calm. The air inside was thick with the comforting aroma of herbs and something vaguely sweet, a scent that always managed to untangle the knots in Akeli’s stomach. Mama Opitchi, her face a roadmap of a life well-lived, sat by her hearth, stirring a pot that sent plumes of fragrant steam into the air. Her eyes, sharp and twinkling, seemed to see right through Akeli’s forced smile.
“Ah, Akeli, my little bird,” Mama Opitchi’s voice was like warm honey, smooth and soothing. “You arrive with the weight of a thousand sunsets on your shoulders. Come, sit. The pot is almost ready, and it’s a brew meant for troubled minds.”
