The afternoon sun, a brazen disc in the Amuri sky, beat down on the dusty schoolyard, turning the air into a shimmering haze. Akeli, perched on a sun-warmed stone, felt the heat seep through her flimsy dress, but it was the heat from within, the simmering cauldron of adolescent anxiety, that truly made her sweat. Her eyes, wide and perpetually curious, were fixed on the epicenter of all teenage drama: Aketch.

Aketch, a whirlwind of bright fabric and even brighter laughter, held court near the mango tree. Her voice, a melodic instrument of command, sliced through the general din. Today, her audience was a gaggle of girls, their faces upturned, hanging on her every word. Aketch was demonstrating, with exaggerated grace, how to properly apply the kohl eyeliner that had become the latest craze. Her fingers, adorned with an assortment of rings that glinted like tiny captured stars, moved with practiced precision.

“You see?” Aketch declared, her voice dripping with mock patience, as a girl named Adwoa fumbled with her own eyeliner pencil, leaving a smudged line that resembled a startled caterpillar. “It’s not about how much you put on, Adwoa, it’s about the art. The subtle whisper of allure, not the shout of desperation.”
