The air in the Pendleton residence, once thick with the scent of polished mahogany and Eleanor’s delicate rosewater perfume, now carried a subtle, almost imperceptible chill. It clung to the heavy velvet drapes, seeped into the Persian rugs, and settled in the corners of Gerald Pendleton’s study, where Charles now held court. He sat opposite his father, not with the deference of a son, but with the calculated poise of a prosecutor. The flickering gaslight cast long, dancing shadows, mirroring the turmoil brewing within Charles. He spoke in measured tones, each word a carefully placed stone on a path of his own design.

“Father,” he began, his voice smooth as river stone, “I’ve been meaning to speak with you about Laura.”

Gerald, a man whose face was etched with the stern lines of command and the fainter, more recent scars of transatlantic ventures, grunted, his gaze fixed on the intricate patterns of his desk blotter. “What about her, Charles? Is she causing trouble?” His tone was laced with a weariness that spoke of a man perpetually burdened by the demands of his empire and the quiet, unyielding presence of his wife.
