The humid Bangkok air, once a balm to Kiara’s frayed nerves, now felt thick with an invisible threat. She’d spent the last few days navigating the bustling markets, her senses on high alert, the twenty-year-old’s meager rubies dwindling with each necessary purchase. Yet, a fragile sense of peace had begun to bloom, nurtured by the kindness of strangers and the quiet anonymity of this foreign land. Milano's unexpected appearance in her life had been a spark, a flicker of warmth in the encroaching darkness, but she’d pushed him away, her ingrained caution a formidable shield.

Today, however, the shadows seemed to lengthen, coiling around her like unwelcome serpents. She was browsing a stall laden with vibrant silks, the merchant’s practiced patter a familiar melody, when a prickle of unease crawled up her spine. Two men, their faces impassive, their suits too sharp for the sweltering heat, were watching her. Their gazes were not curious, not appreciative, but assessing, predatory. A cold dread, a sensation she knew all too well, began to seep into her bones.

She glanced around, her heart hammering against her ribs. There was no sign of Milano, no friendly face to anchor her. These men, she knew instinctively, were not here for pleasantries. They carried the same air of menace that had clung to her step-father, the same chilling authority that had dictated her every move for years. Grandmother Rehab. The name echoed in her mind, a sharp, discordant note.
