Winter's Fury
The world outside Grizz’s cabin had ceased to exist. Not in any literal sense, of course. The snow, a relentless white tide, had simply erased the horizon, swallowing roads, trees, and the very concept of a path. Bear Claw, a mere twenty miles distant but feeling like a continent away, was now a ghost town, entombed in drifts that rose higher than a man’s head. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of pine, woodsmoke, and a subtle, musky warmth that JJ had come to associate with Grizz. The storm, which had begun as an inconvenience, had become a cage, and they, its unlikely occupants.
JJ watched Grizz as he moved about the small cabin, his massive frame a constant, grounding presence. He was meticulously tending the fire, stoking it with logs that seemed impossibly small in his calloused hands. The raw power that emanated from him was undeniable, a low hum beneath the surface of his quiet demeanor. Yet, it was the control he exerted that fascinated her. The way his brow furrowed slightly when he caught himself staring too long, the deliberate slowness of his movements when he felt the Bear stirring within.
“You’re quiet today,” Grizz’s voice rumbled, breaking the silence. He didn’t turn, his gaze fixed on the crackling flames.
