The house felt strangely quiet. Leo’s parents bustled about, their movements a little too quick, their smiles a little too bright. They kept patting Leo’s head and saying things like, “You’re doing so well, champ!” and “Almost time, sport!” But Leo wasn’t really listening. He was holding his drawing of Whiskers, the one where the cat had rainbow-colored fur and was chasing a giant butterfly. It was his secret shield, a fluffy, paper-thin defense against the wobbly, hospital-shaped worries that kept trying to creep into his brain. He imagined the doctors and nurses were all wearing giant, polka-dotted clown shoes, and that the operating room was actually a bouncy castle filled with jello. It was a silly thought, he knew, but it was the only thing that made the knot in his tummy loosen just a tiny bit.

Meanwhile, at home, a certain fluffy creature was experiencing his own brand of quiet. Whiskers, a magnificent ball of ginger fluff with paws the size of small marshmallows, was contemplating the profound mysteries of the universe. Or, more accurately, he was contemplating the fascinating dance of dust motes in a sunbeam. He’d watched Leo leave, a small, determined figure clutching a piece of paper, and had offered a farewell chirp that sounded suspiciously like, “Don’t forget the tuna!” Now, the house was quieter than a mouse convention.

He padded into the living room, his tail held high like a fluffy question mark. Leo’s dad was sitting on the sofa, staring at his phone, but his fingers weren’t scrolling. They were still. Whiskers, ever the helpful companion, decided this was the perfect moment for a little quality control. He stretched out a paw, claws thankfully sheathed, and gently batted at one of Leo’s dad’s shoelaces. It was a delicate, almost imperceptible nudge.
