Chapter 8
Chapter 8: The Weight of the Stone
Larry and Rojas flee through the jungle, pursued by the man in the suit. They find temporary shelter in an abandoned observation post, where Larry examines the photograph and note, realizing Dr. Alvarez left a deliberate trail. A new clue points them toward a destination, but the sound of approaching footsteps cuts their respite short.
The jungle closed around them like a living thing. Branches whipped at Larry's arms, and roots grabbed at his feet, but he did not slow down. The sound of the man's shouts faded behind them, swallowed by the dense canopy and the constant hum of insects.
Rojas led, his movements sure and swift. He did not look back. Larry followed, his lungs burning, the photograph and note pressed against his chest inside his shirt. The hummingbird in his pocket seemed to pulse with each heartbeat, a small reminder of the weight he carried.
They ran until the light began to fade, the green of the canopy deepening into shadow. Rojas finally stopped near a fallen log, its surface covered in moss. He crouched, listening. Larry doubled over, gasping for air.
