Chapter 7: The Cave Behind the Waterfall
Larry and Rojas cross the singing river and enter the cave behind the waterfall, where they discover evidence of Dr. Alvarez's recent presence but also signs that the man in the suit is closing in.
The water was cold, shockingly so against Larry's sweat-soaked skin. The current tugged at his legs, eager to sweep him downstream, but Rojas's grip was firm. The river's song surrounded them, a low vibration that seemed to come from the very stones beneath their feet.
Larry placed each step with care, his sandals finding purchase on slick rocks. The water rose to his chest, then his shoulders. He held the map fragment above his head, the paper already damp at the edges. The hummingbird in his pocket pressed against his hip, a small weight that felt like an anchor.
"Almost there," Rojas said, his voice barely audible over the water's melody.
