The air in the catacombs hung thick and cold, a palpable presence that clung to Valerius’s cloak like grave dust. Each guttural drip of water echoed like a hammer blow in the oppressive silence, a stark contrast to the frantic thrumming of his own heart. He moved with a predator’s stealth, his boots making barely a whisper on the damp stone floor. The flickering light of his lantern cast dancing shadows that played tricks on the eyes, morphing stalactites into grasping claws and ancient sarcophagi into hunched figures watching his every move. He’d followed the faintest of trails – a scuff mark here, a dislodged pebble there – leading him deeper into the earth, away from the gilded cages of the castle and into the forgotten heart of the kingdom.

He’d expected to find Aurelia, perhaps huddled and terrified, or perhaps defiant, as he’d come to know her from the whispers and the fragments of evidence. And in the center, bathed in an ethereal glow from a hidden source of phosphorescent moss, stood the princess.

She wasn’t huddled. She wasn’t terrified. She was… waiting. Her posture was regal, her gaze steady, fixed on the entrance through which Valerius had just emerged. Her hands, usually adorned with delicate rings, were clasped before her, but there was a tension in her knuckles that spoke of suppressed energy, not fear. Beside her, Elara stood guard, her hand resting on the hilt of a wickedly sharp dagger, her eyes darting between the princess and the shadows.
