Chapter 10
The Catacombs' Secret
The catacombs are a labyrinth of darkness and forgotten history. Valerius and Elara navigate the chilling depths, sensing they are close to both the princess and the heart of the conspiracy.
The air in the catacombs was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and unsettling, like dust disturbed from a sleep of centuries. Detective Valerius adjusted the lantern, its weak glow pushing back the oppressive darkness only to reveal more of it, a hungry void that seemed to swallow the light. Beside him, Elara moved with a practiced silence, her eyes, accustomed to the city's underbelly, now scanning the rough-hewn stone walls with an intensity that mirrored Valerius's own. Her knowledge of the city’s hidden veins was uncanny, a testament to a life lived in its shadows. But the sheer scale of this place, this subterranean labyrinth, was daunting.
Elara nodded, her gaze fixed on a faint discoloration on the wall. "The old smuggler's routes… they often followed the forgotten pathways. The ones built long before the castle stood. This passage, it’s marked on some of the older charts I… acquired." The slight hesitation in her voice was almost imperceptible, a flicker of something she rarely allowed to surface.
