The air, once crisp with the scent of pine and high desert sage, now tasted of sulfur and something ancient, something that clawed at the back of the throat. It began as a whisper, a low rumble that vibrated up through the soles of boots, a tremor that had been growing for days, dismissed by the few remaining inhabitants as the earth sighing in its sleep. Then, the sky, a canvas of impossibly deep blue just hours before, began to bruise.
A smudge of grey appeared on the western horizon, then another, coalescing with alarming speed. It wasn't the gentle drift of clouds; this was a deliberate, suffocating advance. The sun, a fierce midday orb, faltered, its light diffusing into a sickly yellow, then a dull ochre. Panic, a cold serpent, coiled in the gut of Sheriff Brody, his hand instinctively reaching for the worn grip of his sidearm. He’d seen dust storms rage across the San Juans, but this… this was different. This was the sky bleeding.
The first flakes of ash weren't flakes at all, but gritty grains that stung exposed skin. They settled on the dashboard of Brody's patrol car, obscuring the already blurred view. The wind, which had been a playful companion, turned into a furious beast, whipping the ash into a blinding tempest. Visibility dropped to zero in a matter of minutes. The world outside his vehicle dissolved into a maelstrom of grey.
