The air in our small dwelling had grown thick with a silence that was heavier than any I had known. Outside, the city, once a vibrant tapestry of sounds and smells, had muted to a mournful hum. The coughing, a dry, rasping thing, had become the dominant rhythm of our days, a constant, unwelcome reminder of the unseen enemy that stalked our streets. Liora, her face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue, moved through the cramped rooms like a shadow, her every gesture a testament to her fierce, practical love. She would boil water for draughts of bitter herbs, her brow furrowed with worry, her eyes darting to my own frail form, then to the small cot where our youngest cousin, barely old enough to walk, lay listlessly.

"Superstition," Kael had scoffed when I’d first spoken of Master Theron’s gift, his face a mask of derision. "Fables for the gullible. We need practical remedies, not dusty scrolls." His words, though sharp, had lodged themselves in my mind, a seed of doubt that had threatened to choke the fragile shoots of understanding I was beginning to nurture. But as the sickness tightened its grip, as Liora’s worried glances became more frequent, Kael’s pragmatism seemed hollow, his pronouncements as empty as the market stalls that now stood deserted.
