With the festival deadline looming, the team races against time to get the carnival ready. A last-minute miracle seems impossible.

The air thrummed with a frantic energy, a frantic hummingbird’s wingbeat against the ticking clock. The town’s annual festival, the very reason for the carnival’s existence, was a mere sunrise away, and the grounds of “Kayson’s Carnival of Wonders” looked less like a place of joy and more like a forgotten battlefield of chipped paint and tangled wires. Kayson, his usually optimistic face etched with a desperate kind of hope, surveyed the scene. He’d spent the last few days with Ms. Periwinkle, Barnaby, and a surprisingly enthusiastic handful of townsfolk, patching, painting, and attempting to coax life back into the skeletal remains of his uncle’s legacy.

“Is the Ferris wheel… is it supposed to lean like that?” Ms. Periwinkle asked, her voice tight with a professional concern that couldn’t quite mask the flicker of excitement in her eyes. She was holding a clipboard, her stern librarian composure battling the sheer absurdity of their surroundings. The giant wheel, a rusty monarch, did indeed list precariously to the left, a mournful sigh escaping its metal frame with every gust of wind.

Barnaby, his massive arms crossed over his barrel chest, grunted. “She’s got a bit of a personality, that one. Needs a firm hand. And maybe another bolt. Or ten.” He’d spent much of the morning wrestling with the ancient generator, its guttural coughs and sputtering protests a constant soundtrack to their efforts.
