The air in the carnival grounds hummed with a nervous energy, a low thrumming that vibrated through the soles of Kayson’s worn sneakers. It was the day before the Whispering Pines Annual Festival, and the grounds, while still a glorious mess, were undeniably more… carnival-like. Barnaby, with his immense strength and surprisingly delicate touch, had wrestled the Ferris wheel back into a semblance of uprightness, its skeletal frame now gleaming under the afternoon sun. Ms. Periwinkle, her librarian’s bun a little looser than usual, had somehow organized the ticket booth into a bastion of efficiency, her stern pronouncements usually followed by a surprisingly cheerful clatter of change. Even the grumpy mascots seemed to be channeling their inner cheer, their tattered fur now sporting hastily sewn patches.

Kayson stood near the entrance, a smudge of grease on his cheek and a hopeful grin on his face, surveying the scene. It wasn't perfect, not by a long shot. The tilt-a-whirl still made a disconcerting grinding noise that sounded suspiciously like a dragon clearing its throat, and the carousel horses, lovingly repainted by Kayson, now sported slightly cross-eyed expressions. But it was alive. It was a testament to sheer, unadulterated effort, and to the unlikely camaraderie that had bloomed amidst the chaos.

His brief moment of satisfied contemplation was shattered by a sleek, black limousine purring to a halt at the edge of the grounds. Silas Croft emerged, looking impossibly dapper in a crisp white suit, a stark contrast to the peeling paint and faded bunting surrounding them. He surveyed Kayson’s efforts with an amused smirk, the kind that promised trouble.
