Chapter 7 - Aunt by Marriage
Alex wakes after his night with Maya carrying a new confidence. During the day, he helps around the commune and notices the women's attitudes have shifted further. Aunt JJ takes Alex aside for a private conversation in the greenhouse, where she reveals she is his aunt by marriage, not blood, and that his uncle left years ago. JJ hints at her own interest, and later that evening she comes to Alex's room. They have a sexual encounter that deepens their bond and changes the dynamic of Alex's summer. Ruth observes the shift. The chapter ends with Alex realizing the summer has taken on dimensions he never anticipated.
Alex woke with grass in his hair.
He found it in the shower. Green blades stuck to his scalp, his neck, the small of his back. The water ran warm and the grass swirled down the drain. He stood there longer than he needed to. The night was on his skin and he wasn't ready to wash it off. Not all of it. Not yet.
He dressed. Shorts. No shirt. The commune had cured him of the shirt habit by day five. He looked at the mirror. Same face. Same jaw that hadn't quite decided if it was square or round. Same eyes. But something behind the eyes was different. Something had been lit. A pilot light. Small but steady.
