Chapter 6 - Maya
Alex joins Maya at the meadow after dinner. Under the stars, they talk and their connection deepens from playful banter into physical intimacy. Maya discovers Alex is a virgin and takes the lead with patience and warmth. They have sex in the meadow. Alex returns to the commune changed, carrying a new confidence and the knowledge that his summer has truly begun.
The afternoon passed like honey from a spoon. Slow. Thick. Sweet on the tongue but never quite fast enough.
Alex helped with lunch. He washed dishes. He swept the kitchen floor while Ruth supervised from a chair, issuing corrections like a general directing traffic. The broom was too short. The strokes were wrong. He was pushing the dirt, not guiding it. He nodded at each instruction and did it his way anyway. Ruth noticed. Ruth noticed everything. She said nothing. The floor got clean.
Dinner came. The long table. The communal plates. The noise of fifteen women eating and talking and laughing. Alex sat between Patricia and a woman named Helen who taught ceramics on Tuesdays. Helen talked about kiln temperatures. Alex nodded. He ate his vegetables. He ate his bread. He ate everything on his plate and went back for seconds.
