Chapter 11 — The Quiet Ones
On his tenth day at the commune, Alex works through his hand injury and helps with morning chores. He woke at five. The hand had stiffened overnight. The gauze had gone gray. He flexed his fingers. They moved. They moved slowly and they moved with a dull hot pulse, but they moved.
He showered. He dressed. He kept the bandage dry by holding his left hand outside the shower stream, which made washing awkward. He managed. He'd managed worse. He hadn't, really, but that's what he told himself.
The kitchen was empty. He made coffee. He drank it black. He didn't usually drink it black. Today seemed like a black coffee kind of day. He sat at the long table and looked at his hand. The gauze was wrapped tight. Jessica had done good work. Neat. Even. The kind of wrapping that came from years of practice.
