"Hello?" The word was a thin thread, barely audible, as she finally answered. Her voice, a little rough from disuse, cracked on the second syllable.

"Mrs. Davies? It's Sarah from Child Protective Services." The voice on the other end was smooth, practiced, like a river stone worn smooth by endless currents. It was a voice that carried the weight of authority, a voice that could deliver pronouncements that reshaped lives with a few carefully chosen syllables.
