But today, it felt more like a buzzing swarm of agitated wasps trapped in a jar. The email, innocent enough in its subject line – “Urgent Update on Your IP Filing” – had landed like a lead weight in his inbox, and the contents had sent a cold dread snaking through him.
He reread the lines, his knuckles white as he gripped his worn desk chair. “Dear valued client, we are pleased to inform you that your comprehensive Intellectual Property filing, as per our agreement dated [redacted date], has been successfully processed. $10,000. For services he hadn't asked for. Services that, as far as he knew, hadn't even been performed. His initial agreement, a handshake deal sealed with a thousand dollars, was meant to ensure his IP was filed “properly and professionally.” He’d felt a pang of unease even then, the price feeling a tad steep for a few clicks and a few forms, but the promise of a smooth, legitimate process had overridden his gut. Now, that gut was screaming.
