Andrew watched it all unfold, a steady smile playing on his lips, a warmth blooming in his chest that had nothing to do with the crackling fire in the common room hearth. He stood by the window, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the worn floorboards, and observed Marcus. Marcus, who’d arrived three months prior a hollowed-out shell, his eyes darting with paranoia, his hands perpetually trembling. Today, Marcus was carefully tending to the small vegetable patch they’d managed to cultivate out back. His movements were deliberate, his brow furrowed in concentration as he gently coaxed a stubborn weed from the soil. He was talking to the plants, a low murmur Andrew couldn’t quite make out, but the tone was one of gentle encouragement, of shared effort. It was a far cry from the guttural curses and desperate pleas that had once been Marcus's sole vocabulary.
