The paint on the walls of the men’s home, a hopeful robin’s egg blue Andrew had chosen himself, seemed to mock him. It was peeling in the bathroom, a damp, insidious creep from a leak he’d thought was fixed weeks ago. And the furnace, that temperamental beast that had sighed and sputtered its way through winter, had finally given up the ghost in the oppressive heat of early summer. A symphony of complaints, polite at first, then increasingly insistent, had echoed through the small house.
“Andrew, Mr. Henderson says his shower’s cold again,” Tasha said, her voice laced with a weariness that mirrored his own. She was perched on a stool in the makeshift office, a stack of bills beside her, her brow furrowed.
He ran a hand over his stubbled chin, the familiar ache of fatigue settling deep in his bones. “Tell him I’m on it. And the furnace… we need to call someone. Again.”
