Muhammad sat on the floor of his small, sparsely decorated room, the rough wood cool beneath his trembling hands. The photograph of his mother, a faded sepia image that was his most prized possession, lay beside him. The day had been a relentless echo of past sorrows, Layan’s sudden departure a brutal reminder of a world that seemed determined to snatch away anything he dared to hold dear. He had felt the familiar, suffocating weight of abandonment settle upon him, a cold dread that whispered insidious questions into the quiet of his mind. *Why does everyone I love leave?* The words had escaped him, a raw, ragged sound that tore through the silence. And then, the bitter, self-deprecating laugh had followed, a sound that was more despair than amusement. *Maybe I am the problem.*

A soft knock at the door startled him. He flinched, expecting his aunt’s sharp voice or his uncle’s usual, silent disapproval. But the knock was gentle, hesitant. He didn’t answer, his throat too tight with unshed tears. The door creaked open, revealing his uncle standing in the dim light of the hallway. He was a man of few words, his presence usually a quiet backdrop to Muhammad’s tumultuous life. Tonight, however, there was a different kind of stillness about him, a hesitant solemnity that drew Muhammad’s gaze. His uncle entered the room slowly, his footsteps almost soundless on the wooden floor. He didn't speak, didn't intrude, but simply sat down beside Muhammad, their shoulders almost touching.

The silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken things. Muhammad clutched the photograph of his mother, his knuckles white. He wanted to disappear, to dissolve into the shadows that clung to the corners of the room. His uncle’s presence was a comfort, a steady anchor in the storm of his emotions, yet it also amplified the ache of his loss. He felt the familiar urge to withdraw, to build his walls higher, to protect himself from the inevitable pain of connection. But tonight, the weight of his grief felt too heavy to bear alone.
