Six years had passed since the day Michael Langa buried his father. The mango tree in the yard had grown taller, its branches spreading wide like a canopy over the memories of childhood. The house still stood, saved penny by penny, brick by brick. The bank had given them time, and Michael had given them everything else.

He was nineteen now, a young man with broad shoulders and calloused hands. His face had lost its boyish softness, replaced by a quiet strength that came from years of hard work and heavy loss. He still lived at home, sleeping in the room he had once shared with Bandile, now Bandile was nine and had his own small cot in the corner. Michael's paycheck from the construction site went to his mother, Thandi, who managed the household with the same quiet determination that had carried them through the darkest days.

Nelson had moved to town for a better job. Zama still cleaned houses but was saving to start her own business. Sphesihle worked at a local shop. Sandile was apprenticing with a mechanic. Amahle helped Thandi at the food stall, and Bandile was in school. The family was surviving, but the weight of the loss never fully lifted. They spoke of Mike often, in soft voices, like a prayer.
