The air in Alex’s apartment, usually so warm and filled with the scent of his cologne and the faint aroma of good coffee, felt thick and suffocating. Sarah stood in the center of the living room, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to flee this opulent cage of a life Alex had built for her, but a deeper, more stubborn part of her, the part that had fallen so desperately in love, held her rooted to the spot.

She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her mind, each scenario more terrifying than the last. Would he rage? Would he deny? Would he simply laugh it all away, as if her fears were the ramblings of a madwoman? But the image of Vincenzo, the cold, hard glint in his eyes, the way he had spoken to Alex in that hushed, dangerous tone, was seared into her memory. There was no turning back from what she had seen, from what she now knew.

Alex walked in, a smile playing on his lips as he shed his coat. He looked, as always, impossibly handsome, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he met hers. "Hey, you," he said, his voice a low, melodic rumble. He moved towards her, his arms reaching out, but Sarah flinched, a barely perceptible tremor that didn’t escape his notice. His smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of concern. "Sarah? What's wrong?"
